Energy Storage from Molecules to Megawatts: Examining the Culmination of 5 Decades of Pioneering Storage Innovation, Development, and Deployment in Honor of Dr. Imre Gyuk

Energy storage continues to prove itself as a versatile tool toward secure, reliable, resilient, and affordable electricity in a strong, modernized electrical grid. Connecting emerging and maturing technologies with unprecedented electricity needs and use cases makes energy storage one of the most exciting technology spaces in the world. This year, in honor of decades of vision and dedication to realizing grid-scale energy storage, we are pleased to dedicate this symposium to the late energy storage pioneer, Dr. Imre Gyuk. Please join world-class experts for a lively collection of presentations, discussion panels, and posters highlighting state-of-the-art technology research and innovation, storage implementation, and real-world challenges and opportunities in grid-scale energy storage. A fitting tribute to Dr. Gyuk and his vision for grid-scale storage, this event promises to be among the most significant energy storage events this year.

Dr. Imre Gyuk was Director of Energy Storage Research at the U.S. Department of Energy. For the past 2 decades, he had directed work on a wide portfolio of storage technologies for a broad spectrum of applications. Under his leadership the DOE program grew into a $100M a year effort while storage technology became one of the hottest topics of the electricity business. He was partnered with the states on numerous projects for grid resilience. Dr. Gyuk’s Program included research on materials, devices, and systems; it also funded work on analytics, policy, finance, and most recently, social equity and long duration storage. His work led to 12 R&D 100 awards, two EPA Green Chemistry Challenge Award, and Lifetime Achievement Awards from ESA and NAATBatt. He was internationally recognized as a leader in the energy storage field.

After receiving a B.S. from Fordham University, Dr. Gyuk did graduate work at Brown University on Superconductivity. Having received a Ph.D. in Theoretical Particle Physics from Purdue University he became a Research Associate at Syracuse. As an Assistant Professor he taught Physics, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Architecture at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Gyuk became an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at Kuwait University where he became interested in issues of sustainability.
