Tiny pieces of plastic on the lengthscale of smaller than 5 mm (“microplastics”) are now pervasive in our environment and are found in our oceans, freshwater, plants, animals, and even human bodies. Understanding how these microplastics spread is the focus of this inaugural symposium at TechConnect. The large variety of transport media and processes occur through all of our environmental systems including oceans, rivers, soil, and air. Understanding the transport process also requires accurate detection of these tiny plastic particles that come in many shapes and sizes. The detection process will also be covered from sampling through analysis to cover the full scope of this challenging issue.
