Orlando Coronell, Ph.D., is a Professor of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, and Adjunct Faculty of Applied Physical Sciences, at UNC-Chapel Hill. He studies fundamental and applied aspects of water purification technologies, with an emphasis on membrane and sorbent technology. Orlando currently serves as co-director of the NC Pure Project at UNC Chapel Hill, a US$10M effort that aims to evaluate from bench- to pilot-scale commercial and novel sorbents for the removal of PFAS from water. He is also a co-founder and Engineering Lead of Sorbenta, Inc. which develops and commercializes next-generation granular resins to remove PFAS from contaminated waters. Orlando was elected as a member of the 2019 Class of Influential Researchers by ACS Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research. He is also a member of the editorial boards of npj Clean Water and JMS letters. Orlando earned his Master’s and PhD degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
