Summary:

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in soil and groundwater presents a persistent environmental challenge due to their chemical stability and mobility. CETCO’s FLUORO-SORB® Adsorbent technology is a unique surface treated clay technology that binds PFAS through an electrostatic and hydrophobic chemical bonding. FLUORO-SORB® offers a highly adaptable solution for in-situ remediation of PFAS, providing effective treatment across a range of site conditions and remedial strategies. This presentation explores the versatility of FLUORO-SORB through its deployment in four distinct groundwater remediation scenarios: soil injection, soil mixing, pump-and-treat systems, and permeable reactive barrier (PRB) trenches. FLUORO-SORB has been utilized in several commercial applications due to its high PFAS sorption capacity, site broad-spectrum PFAS removal, compatibility with common ground water chemistries, and compatibility with various remedial approaches. Soil injection enables targeted delivery into contaminated source zones, while soil mixing integrates the adsorbent directly into the contaminated matrix while allowing for more complicated soil admixture designs. In pump-and-treat systems, FLUORO-SORB can provide higher treatment volumes compared to commonly used technologies such as activated carbon. Permeable reactive barriers offer a passive, long-term containment strategy, where Fluoro-sorb can intercept and treat migrating plumes. This presentation will review the PFAS binding mechanism and review laboratory performance testing data. Case studies and performance data will be presented to demonstrate the efficacy of FLUORO-SORB in each scenario. The presentation will address design considerations, implementation challenges, and lessons learned from field applications. This aim of this presentation ss to inform practitioners and stakeholders of the benefits of FLUORO-SORB in streamlining PFAS treatment strategies.
