Summary:

With their layered two-dimensional (2D) structural property, and excellent mechanical strength, early transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) offer promising solid lubrication properties. Nevertheless, since the first titanium carbide MXene, Ti3C2Tx, was synthesized in 2011, friction properties of MXenes has not been fully understood. In this talk, I will discuss the atomic-force-microscopy-based friction measurements on Ti3C2Tx MXene flakes with different thicknesses, to reveal the potential of 2D MXenes as a superlubricant at the nanoscale.
