At Notre Dame since 1988, Professor Buechler teaches students to computationally analyze and visualize complex data arising from real-world problems. He served as the first chair of the Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics from 2010 – 2015. He is also a member of an interdisciplinary research team including clinical pathologists, oncologists and molecular biologists and the principal inventor of 10 issued or pending patents. He is co-founder of the molecular diagnostics companies SYSGenomics and DiagenomiX.
Professor Buechler obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Maryland in 1981. Outside of the classroom and the lab, he enjoys mountain hiking.
