Summary:At BASF, we create chemistry for a sustainable future. We want to contribute to a world that provides a viable future with enhanced quality of life for everyone. We do so by creating chemistry for our customers and society and by making the best use of available resources. Our Performance Materials division brings together materials know-how regarding innovative, customized plastics under one roof. Active in four major industry sectors – transportation, consumer goods, industrial applications and construction – the division has a strong portfolio of products and services combined with a deep understanding of application-oriented system solutions. This paper will demonstrate how circular economy is a well-integrated concept within the development of engineering plastics and polyurethanes. We will share how “keeping it smart” enables us to increase efficiency within our own and our customers’ production processes and how a “closing the loops” approach allows us to recover materials after the end of life and to re-use them in production. Using specific examples from our industry sectors, we will show how resource sharing, product life extension, physical recycling, chemical recycling, and carbon utilization contribute to a portfolio of sustainable materials. Highlights of examples from the Transportation and Consumer segments will round off the presentation.
