The structural versatility of manganese oxides for electrochemical energy storage

Summary:

Manganese is desirable due to its high environmental abundance and low cost. Control of composition, crystallite size, and defect through scalable synthesis approaches will be described in this presentation. Impact of nanostructure and mesoscale electrode structure on capacity, rate capability, and capacity retention will be discussed. Specific improvements in capacity retention realized through targeted elemental substitution will be highlighted. Mechanistic differences in aqueous and non-aqueous battery systems will be described. The use of x-ray absorption spectroscopy to gain insight into mechanism and the evolution of local coordination environment in these systems will be reviewed.
