Summary:Electrodes are one of essential components in electro-chemical energy conversion devices used for energy storage and generation. In this presentation, micro- and nano-engineered electrodes made of metallic backbones will be introduced. The electrode comprises a thin porous metal sheet of pore sizes at micrometer and sub-micrometer level, which provides about an order of magnitude higher surface area density than conventional metal foams, meshes, and dense foils. Furthermore, catalytic active materials such as carbon nanotubes and graphene are grown inside the pore of the metal sheet to increase the electron/reactant contact area. The new electrode shows very high current density for electrolysis of water and electro-chemical ammonia production. Systematic characterization of the new electrode materials will be presented and discussed for potential applications to alkaline water electrolysis, alkaline fuel cells, battery, and ultra-capacitor.
