Surfaces control commercially relevant materials properties and device performance: adhesion, wettability, electrostatic behavior, lubrication, drag, corrosion resistance, fouling, bio-compatibility, durability, etc. Innovations in design, production and control of micro/nanostructured surfaces may enable new and improved product feature and device performance that are not accessible from bulk material properties. This symposium highlights exciting research and development work on surfaces, coatings and membranes made of metals, polymers, organics, oxides, and composites.
Selected papers will be reviewed and invited into a Special Issue of Surface Innovations. Surface Innovations publishes articles on scientific and engineering advances made in the formulation and modification of surfaces and coatings.
The material innovations on surfaces, combined with understanding and manipulation of physics and chemistry of functional surfaces and coatings, have exploded in the past decade at an incredibly rapid pace.
