TECHNOLOGY SUMMARY

SynMatter has developed a method to encapsulate chemical compounds into particles that can be incorporated into coatings to imbue them with additional functionalities beyond merely protecting a surface. These particles are designed to release their contents as needed to provide the coatings with corrosion detection, corrosion prevention and antifouling properties.

Value Proposition: People interact with coatings on walls, cars, furniture, electronics and thousands of other items every day. There is an interest to add additional functionalities to these coatings beyond merely covering, protecting and beautifying the underlying substrate, materials that are termed “smart coatings. Corrosion and biofouling are multi-billion dollar problems that affect nearly all industries, with prominent examples including automotive, aerospace, construction and the marine industry, to name just a few.

SynMatter’s technology enables the creation of additives that can convert any number and types of coatings into smart coatings, with e.g. corrosion indication, corrosion protection and antifouling mitigation properties. Benefits include:
•New Applications: Enables use of active agents that are currently incompatible with coatings and applications.
•Environmentally Friendly: Hazardous materials can be reduced and replaced through the use of safe alternatives, providing compliance with current and future environmental regulations.
•Reduced Loading: Through a combination of high loading rates and low densities, the additive amounts used in coatings can be reduced.
•Longer-lasting Performance: The release is not diffusion based and only occurs when needed.
•Simple and Safe: Decreased need for coating reformulation allows for safer and easier incorporation into existing coating formulations and application methods.
