This talk will be broken into two sections: the first half will focus on the technology/science related to phosphonic acid monolayers whereas the second half will focus on lessons I’ve learned during efforts to commercialize a novel technology. I will be presenting information on how phosphonate monolayers form from solution on different oxide substrates as well as important aspects surrounding substrate preparation, surface analysis, etc. Then, I will describe the typical problems that scientists face as well as skillsets they should look to learn when attempting to develop and sell a commercial product from a novel technology, such as information mining, competitive analyses, workflow organization, and (most importantly) communication/problem-solving approaches.
