Decorated Single- and Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Aiming H2S Sensing

Carbon nanotubes are suitable materials for gas sensing. To promote or improve sensitivity, as well selectivity, experimental procedures have been developed to modify CNTs by the attachment of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles on nanotube outermost walls. Praseodymium-cerium oxide is a very attractive material due to its interesting electronic characteristics and high oxygen ion mobility. The intrinsic redox characteristics of CePr-oxides also make this chemical system promising for applications in gas sensing and catalysis. In this work, a novel hybrid material comprised of single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes decorated with cerium-praseodymium mixed oxide nanoparticles was synthesized. The preparation method, pioneer in the literature, resulted in the oxide nanoparticles grown directly attached on the CNTs walls. Sensing tests using MWCNTs/PrCe-oxide hybrid material deposited between metal electrodes toward H2S have being shown good response in the range of 10-40 ppm. Tests using SWCNTs/PrCe-oxide hybrid material have being performed and achieved responses toward H2S in ppb level, indicating the high potential of this nanocomposite material.
