Project Director

Pecan Street Project Inc.

Ian Dietrich is Project Director of Pecan Street Project Inc., a clean energy/smart grid research and development organization headquartered at the University of Texas. In collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Pecan Street is developing and implementing smart grid and clean energy technologies and business models. Mr. Dietrich was Project Manager for Catellus Development Group, where he was responsible for all aspects of construction-related activities concerning the public-private joint redevelopment of the 711-acre former Robert Mueller Municipal Airport (RMMA) in Austin, Texas. This included selecting and leading teams of scientists, engineers, and other consultants and contractors to coordinate planning, remediation, design, and installation of horizontal and vertical infrastructure as well as working with neighboring communities and stakeholders to ensure good relationships. Ian developed and submitted the $219 million infrastructure budget to the City of Austin and assisted in the development and approval of ongoing changes to both the Zoning Ordinance and the Master Development Agreement between Catellus and the City. Pecan Street’s stimulus project, funded under the Department of Energy’s Smart Grid Demonstration Project fund, is developing an advanced Energy Internet at this mixed-use development, which is now known simply as Mueller. Prior to his work with Catellus, Dietrich was project manager for DR Horton, the nation’s largest Home Builder. There he developed the company’s land after zoning approval and continuing through to final acceptance. Dietrich is a LEED accredited professional, is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish, and has received numerous awards in the development community, including two Association of Builders and Contractors, Inc. awards in 2008 for top honors in two categories of heavy infrastructure. Born in Orange County, Ian graduated with honors from University of California, Davis. He plays guitar and swims at Deep Eddie on the weekends with his wife, Erica, and their daughter, Gabriela.
