This course will cover a wide range of interdisciplinary topics and will focus on the fundamental principles in the field of micro-, nano- and bio-fluidics: physical phenomena, associated technologies as well as current and emerging industrial applications. These fields are advancing rapidly and applications are proliferating, especially in life sciences and biotechnology. The progress in these fields has led to transformative advances in fundamental understanding and applications in point-of-care (POC)/lab-on-chip (LOC) format, miniaturized high-throughput assays, and biomolecular/cellular engineering. It has enabled novel technologies for improving human health in areas that include clinical diagnostics, environmental safety, drug discovery and new therapies for human disease.
The course is designed for a broad audience from both academia and industry that would include undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral and industrial researchers, development engineers, marketing professionals and technology managers who wish to obtain an overview of fundamental principles and real-world applications of the emerging fields of micro, nano and bio fluidics. This especially applies to developers of microfluidic and POC/LOC technology. The presentation throughout the workshop will be at a level understandable by non-experts. The participants will gain an understanding of the physics of fluid dynamics for micro and nanoscale flows and related transport phenomena. They will receive an overview of micro and nano fluidic device technology and the materials and methods used to fabricate these devices. The attendees will be introduced to the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and gain insight into its application for the rational design of novel processes and devices. The participants will obtain a working knowledge of key micro and nano fluidic platform technologies including pressure-driven, inertial, capillary-driven, paper-based, electrowetting-based, droplet-based, electrokinetic-driven, centrifugal-driven, ultrasonic-based microfluidics, mixers, valves, pumps, bioseparation of cells/particles, etc. They will also obtain an overview of POC/LOC technology and applications including cell analysis, biosensing, clinical diagnostics, bioassays, nucleic acid amplification, genomics, proteomics, among others. The graduates of the workshop will gain a working knowledge of these topics and be able to read and understand technical publications and research papers in these areas. The insight gained in this workshop will be useful for the development of new technologies and the marketing of commercial applications.
