Fluid-screen combines microfluidics, microelectronics, and microbiology to detect bacterial contamination in 30 minutes as opposed to days. The device uses a two-step process to concentrate and detect bacteria directly. Manufacturing, food, pharmaceutical, environmental, and any other industry that needs to detect bacterial contamination quickly will benefit from the product.

Value Proposition: In 2012 a compounding pharmacy in Framingham, MA released a series of 17,000 contaminated medicines. Fourteen thousand people got infected, over 800 otherwise healthy people got sick, and 64 people died because of microbial contamination. The reason is inefficiency in quality control in manufacturing. It takes over 10 days to test manufactured products for bacterial contamination, and for ingestibles, testing must occur at each step of the manufacturing pathway.
Weeks-long bacterial contamination testing means manufacturing, agricultural, and environmental contamination events can take a month or more to clear. Contamination-related shutdowns occur on average three times per year in industry and represent a loss of $300k per event, meaning that contamination causes companies nearly $1M in damages per year. Damages are greater, both numerically through litigation and through branding losses, if products are shipped before contamination is detected.
By greatly reducing the time it takes to both detect a contamination event and to clear infrastructure for further use, Fluid-Screen technology promises to save industry hundreds of thousands of dollars per year in direct quality assurance, and much more in potential litigation and brand value, by reducing industrial downtime and speeding incident recovery.
