Team Leader, Trade and Project Finance, International Trade Administration
U.S. Department of CommerceMichael Fuchs has been involved in international trade issues at the U.S. Department of Commerce since 1982. Since January 1998, he has served as Team Leader for Trade and Project Finance in the Office of Finance and Insurance Industries responsible for overseeing a small staff covering trade finance, project finance and development finance. The team coordinates Commerce views on financing and policy proposals at the EXIM Bank and OPIC Board meetings, represents the Department at the Treasury-led interagency group which reviews World Bank and multilateral development bank transactions and serves on the U.S. delegation to official export credit financing negotiations hosted by the OECD as well as International Working Group on Export Credits, a group of 18 developed and developing country providers of export credits.
From 1992 to 1997, Mr. Fuchs served as Senior International Trade Specialist for development finance. In this capacity, he represented the Department at the Working Group on Multilateral Aid, a Treasury-led inter-agency committee that reviews projects financed by the multilateral development banks to ensure that these meet both developmental and U.S. policy interests. In addition, he served as the Office’s coordinator for Japanese official development assistance, charged with developing and implementing programs to help U.S. companies take advantage of potential business opportunities created by official untied financing for developing countries.
From 1985 to 1991, he was the Department's senior health care products specialist responsible for evaluating trade policies and regulations that affect the medical device industry, negotiating market opening measures with various countries, and serving as liaison between the Department and principal health care trade associations. During this period, he authored a number of publications on the competitiveness of the medical device industry.
A native of Washington, D.C., Mr. Fuchs received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Maryland in 1979 and his Master's Degree in economics from the American University in 1981. Mr. Fuchs is married and has two children.
