TECHNOLOGY SUMMARY

Nanolayered polymeric gradient refractive index (GRIN) lenses were fabricated enabling vis-SWIR optical device size and weight reductions up to 50%. A low rate manufacturing and metrology process at PolymerPlus has demonstrated fabricated NVG GRIN eye piece prototypes at 25% less weight and identical optical performance to a glass-eyepiece.

FIGURES OF MERIT

Value Proposition: Nanolayered polymer gradient refractive index optics were fabricated and demonstrated to reduce Vis-SWIR optical system mass/volume 25 – 50% by replacing glass or plastic optic(s) and reducing the required optical element count. Prototype night vision imaging eyepieces have passed room temperature military specifications with optical performance identical to glass-optics.

GOVT/EXTERNAL FUNDING SOURCES

Government Funding/Support to Date: PolymerPlus was previously awarded a DARPA MGRIN Program research subcontract that has transitioned to ONR Code 30 FIRES ALERT program. Additionally a USAF SBIR Phase I award was received in July of 2014 to expand the GRIN technology to non-linear optical GRIN lenses.
