TECHNOLOGY SUMMARY

ORNL has patented new alumina forming austenetic stainless steel alloy compositions for use in castings at temperatures up to 900-950ºC, and work is underway to modify the compositions of these cast alloys to increase their upper operating temperatures to 1100ºC.

Value Proposition: Alumina-forming austenitic stainless steels are a novel class of high performance steel alloys. Of particular significance is the energy production market where the shapes of the components are amenable to a centrifugal casting process.
