amoebaPURE: Amoeba as Natural Containers for Pathogen Transport

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California, United States

TECHNOLOGY SUMMARY

Amoeba cysts for pathogen transport has the advantages of using an environmentally tolerant system supporting pathogen growth and virulence and resistant to contamination.Pathogens persist in cysts for years and then emerge when the amoebae excyst.Cysts are composed of cellulose-like material, extremely resistant to biocide and mechanical lysis, naturally protecting enclosed pathogens.

Primary Application Area: Biotech & Biological Sciences

Technology Development Status: Prototype

Technology Readiness Level: TRL 3

FIGURES OF MERIT

Value Proposition: Hospitals, environmental monitors, and scientific researchers can now transport clinical and environmental pathogenic samples for identification and diagnosis to laboratories in a safe and effective manner. amoebaPURE allows increased shipping times while reducing sample degradation and ensuring sample integrity.
