The main objective of the symposium is to provide a forum for all stakeholders involved in nanotechnology - industry, academia and policy makers- to discuss the way towards sustainability for the world and the nanotech industry. To this end, the symposium will highlight the latest applications-focused research, and will facilitate discussions on issues related to environmental health and safety of nanomaterials and nanotechnology, life cycle implications, risk assessment and policy issues and environmental nanotechnology applications.

Special emphasis will be given on sustainability and safer by design concepts for responsible development of nanotechnology. This implies the need to validate grouping of nanomaterials by their chemical classes or by their mode-of-action, but also the need to benchmark nano-enabled products by parameters such as use pattern and scenario-dependent probabilities of release. Methods and requirements of risk assessment need to be balanced and harmonized between chemicals with and without nano structures.

We believe that Nanotech2014 due to its convening power, can bring together all stakeholders and facilitate discussions on how we can pave the way for a sustainable nanotechnology industry. Applications and EHS implications need to be addressed in parallel while environmental health risk regulations need to be based on scientific evidence.
