TechConnect Innovation Program

Passive wireless sensors for extreme environments

Applied Sensor Research & Development Corporation, Maryland, United States

TECHNOLOGY SUMMARY

RFID-coded SAW sensors are interrogated wirelessly using RF signals, and respond with a signal encoding both the sensor's identity and the sensor measurement(s), with no batteries required in the sensor. These rugged devices operate from cryogenic temperatures to >1000°C, are RADHARD to >10 MRad, with lifetimes of several decades.

Primary Application Area: Electronics, Sensors & Communications

Technology Development Status: Prototype

Technology Readiness Level: TRL 4

FIGURES OF MERIT

Value Proposition: Arc flash: Prevent damage rather than detect it; $100k+/incident repair cost saved +downtime
Oil & gas: Diagnostic and prognostic sensors to provide actionable information to allow asset owners to prioritize preventive maintenance, avoid or detect and rapidly stop even small leaks and spills (>$3 Billion cost in 5 years)
