My research focuses on the design and uses of magnetic nanoparticles, near infrared fluorescent (NIRF), and magneto/optical probes for a wide range of questions in biology, chemistry and physics. I have developed nanoparticles that are detectable by MRI and NIRF (magneto/optical probes), and demonstrated their use as pre-operative MR contrast agents and intra-operative optical probes in important clinical applications including lymph node delineation and brain tumor delineation. A second area I am involved with is the development of annexin V based probes for imaging apoptosis, which plays a crucial in the pathology and treatment of disease. Annexin V is used to image the induction of apoptosis by chemotherapy, to predict long-term chemotherapeutic efficacy early in the course of treatment. I obtained my B.S. in chemistry (U. of Wisconsin, Madison, 1967) and a Ph.D. in biochemistry (State University of NY at Stony Brook, 1976). I did a post-doctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Guido Guidotti (Harvard University), where I collaborated with Lewis Cantley in discovering the biological actions of vanadate. I co-founded AMAG Pharmaceuticals and served as its Vice-President and Chief Scientific Officer (1982-1997), during which time the drugs Gastromark, Feridex VI, Combidex/Sinerem and Feraheme underwent pre-clinical and clinical development. I joined the Center for Molecular Imaging Research in 1998 and remained there until 2008, when I joined the Center for Translational Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging under the Department of Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. I have over 100 peer-reviewed publications and 30 issued US patents. I am a co-founder and consultant to T2 Biosystems, a company developing MR based assays and sensors.
