Bicosome: Skin Delivery System with Long-Lasting Benefits

Effective skin treatments require products able to penetrate gently the skin, remaining there, and delivering its benefits in target layers. Bicosome is an innovative lipid system formed by smart biocompatible nanostructures enclosed in a vesicle that are able to penetrate through the narrow intercellular spaces of the skin and, once there, they self-aggregate and grow being retained in between skin cells1, 2. This work studies the effect of bicosomes on the skin using Synchrotron IR microspectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, TEM and X-ray scattering3-4. In vivo biophysical parameters of the skin were also evaluated by measuring transepidermial water loss and elasticity. Our results demonstrated that bicosomes penetrate and are distributed into the different skin layers remaining there for days. These systems reinforce the skin lipid structure by increasing content and ordering of skin lipids and protect collagen against thermal damage. After 10 days treatment with bicosome, in vivo results shows a reinforcement of the barrier function and improvement of skin elasticity, showing a long lasting effect up to 5 days after stop treatment. Bicosome incorporates a number of actives and preservs these actives from degradation, increases the retention of these actives in the skin and improves in their activity.
