Droplet actuation on a digital microfluidic chip using a 5 volt battery

This paper presents a circuit using a 5-volt DC battery to actuate droplets on a DMF chip. The output of the circuit is a controllable high voltage, high frequency AC signal which can actuate a droplet on array of fabricated electrodes. With the use of this small driver circuit, different DMF operators (i.e., moving, dispensing, splitting, and merging) were successfully performed. As an example, Figure 2 shows manipulation and splitting of a DI water conducted on a DMF platform. Due to the fact that the output current of the CCFL transformer is very low, the chance of dielectric breakdown is significantly reduced in the system.
