As we enter the era of pervasive connectivity and cloud based computing, the current paradigm of compute and memory architectures is facing a significant challenge. The system level performance requirements for low energy and faster computation can no longer be met by conventional Moore’s law based scaling of devices. As a result, new ways to utilize memory for more efficient computation and storage is inevitable. Several flavors of the new memory technologies and materials based on alternate state variables are under active investigation. The basic mechanisms and concepts driving the most promising technologies, their current development status, and potential opportunities for providing differentiated product solutions will be discussed.
