Nanomagnet Logic - From Concept to Prototype

As the semiconductor industry foresees an inevitable slowing of Moore's Law, many researchers are trying to develop new technologies that go beyond CMOS, in speed, density, cost, or some other desirable metric. Notre Dame has been developing "Nanomagnet Logic" (NML) in which arrays of thin-film nanomagnet interact to perform Boolean logic. The advantages of using nanomagnetic devices is the potential for high density and low power, but also radiation hardness and nonvolatility. I will discuss the overall concept and development plan for in-plane NML, methods of clocking pipelined architectures, materials-related solutions to decreasing power consumption, and input/output devices that interface with CMOS.
