Summary:

Lightweight, flexible carbon nanotube (CNT) wire and cable can be substituted for metal based wire and cables and save up to 70 percent of the weight of electrical cable systems. Given the number and length of electrical cables on military or commercial aircraft, the weight savings and thus energy savings over the life of the aircraft could be enormous. World renowned connectivity companies have demonstrated that CNT cables using Nanocomp Technologies, Inc. CNT materials exhibit properties that enable their use in existing aircraft wiring harnesses to reduce weight. Current CNT technology (TRL 6) can be utilized for high frequency, data transmission, and low power cables. In addition to meeting established specifications for electrical and mechanical performance, CNT based cables exhibit greater flexibility, higher strength and better fatigue flexure than the corresponding copper cables or traditional shielded cables.
