Nonflammable electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries

Technology Area: Energy Storage

Commercial Maturity: Prototype

Abstract: Common lithium-ion battery electrolytes are made of carbonate-based electrolyte solvents, which have low flashpoints(Fp (DMC) = 18 C) and are highly flammable. Replacing large quantities of the electrolyte solvent with a nonflammable cosolvent hydrofluoroether (HFE), results in nonflammable electrolytes under failure modes known for these types of batteries.
