Dr. Benjamin L. Brown is a Senior Science and Technology Advisor in the Office of the Deputy Director for Science Programs of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. His responsibilities include advising the Office of Science leadership on programmatic and policy issues, and providing coordination and analysis of budgetary, scientific, technical, and operational issues regarding the Office of Science Program Offices and national laboratories. Ben also serves as a staff liaison between the Office of Science front office and the Basic Energy Sciences and Fusion Energy Sciences programs, and is the agency lead on issues and policy development related to the Office of Science User Facilities. He is a regular contributor to the agency’s strategic communications efforts. Prior to joining the Office of Science in 2008, Ben worked on energy and climate policy as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Congressional Fellow in the office of U.S. Senator Ken Salazar. Ben is an experimental atomic, molecular, and optical physicist who received his Ph.D. in Optics from the University of Rochester and his A.B. in physics magna cum laude from Harvard University. He carried out his doctoral research at the University of Oxford and his postdoctoral research at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland, where he was a National Research Council postdoctoral research associate working in the Laser Cooling and Trapping Group. Ben\'s postdoctoral and doctoral research focused on the use of lasers to control quantum systems.
