Alex Norman

Alex Norman

Principal Scientist

United Technologies Research Center

In his current role, Dr. Norman is responsible for establishing the technical vision for the application of neutron and X-ray scattering methods to UTC technologies. Dr. Norman works with department leaders, program offices and senior fellows to identify and develop opportunities for innovation that support future needs of the various business units. He has 14 years of experience in X-ray and neutron scattering and his areas of expertise lie in the realm of polymer physics. While at UTRC, Alex has coordinated collaborative efforts with national lab facilities such as Brookhaven to perform novel experiments including: in-situ structure development of polymer and ceramic matrix composites, failure mechanisms for PEM fuel cell membranes, residual stress in engineering components such as wires and bearings, and interfacial stresses in thermal / environmental barrier coatings. Prior to joining UTRC, Dr. Norman was a Senior Scientist at the Corporate Research Laboratories for ExxonMobil Research and Engineering, specializing in structure-property-processing relationships for commodity plastics, including polyethylene films, polypropylene fibers and specialty elastomers. Alex currently serves as a technical reviewer for various polymer journals, and is a regular reviewer for proposals to national lab facilities, in addition to being an industrial liaison representative for the NSLS and NSLS-II at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society, the Neutron Scattering Society of America and the Materials Research Society, has published 18 external papers.

Education: Ph.D (2003), Polymer Physics, University of Sheffield, UK; B.S (1999), Chemistry, University of Sheffield, U.K.
