Clelia Dispenza is the Chair of BioNanomaterials and Composites Research Unit of the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Chimica, Informatica, Gestionale, Meccanica dell’Università degli Studi di Palermo, Italy, and Associate Researcher of the Istituto di Biofisica, Centro Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italy.

She received her Laurea (Hon.s) in Chemical Engineering from Palermo University, Italy in 1993 and a Ph.D. degree from the same University in 1997. The PhD project was undertaken in collaboration with the Composite Science Research Group of ICI Materials, Wilton, UK. She worked as Polymer Chemistry Manager for ICI Surfactants (later Uniqema), ICI plc, Wilton, UK, from 1997 to 1999 and as Research Assistant at the University of Palermo, Italy, from 2000 to 2002.

In 2002 Dr. Dispenza joined the University of Palermo as Assistant Professor of the Engineering Faculty. Her teaching experience includes taking Chemistry for several first degree courses; Material Science, Composite Science and Biocompatible Materials for Master degree courses, guiding 6 Ph.D. dissertations and about 30 between First degree and Master dissertations in the areas of Composite Materials, Adhesion and Adhesives, Responsive Hydrogels, Conducting Polymers, Nanogels, and Polymeric Scaffolds for Regenerative Medicine.

Her principal research contributions are in the areas of Active and Interactive Polymers, Radiation Synthesis and Modification of Polymers, Bionanomaterials for Healthcare, Polymer Matrix Composites. She has published about 130 research papers in international journals and conference proceedings in national and international conferences in the area of her research interest.

She has executed and/or supervised a number of externally funded projects and collaborations with National and International Companies. Among them: Molecular Nanotechnologies for controlled drug delivery (PRIN 2010 Govt. of Italy sponsored project - running); Creation of the Laboratory of High Energy Irradiation Treatments within the \\\"Mediterranean Center for Human Health Advanced Biotechnologies\\\" (Med-CHHAB) (a PON 2007-2012 EU sponsored project – running); Structure-properties relationships of epoxy matrices for carbon further composites: the effect of the network structure on the materials behavior towards solvents exposure (2009-2013 supported by Cytec Engineered Materials – running); Biodegradable, injectable in situ forming hydrogels for sustained release of proteins (2011-2012 supported by Merck Serono - completed); Marie Curie Training Network. \\\"Multidisciplinary research and training on Composite Materials for Applications in Transport Modes - MOMENTUM\\\". (EU FP-6 2007-2010 EU sponsored project – completed); Stability evaluation of xyloglucan solutions (2009 supported by Alfa Wassermann - completed); Physico-chemical properties of xyloglucan based hydrogels (2008 supported by Alfa Wassermann – completed); Design and characterization of functional hydrogels for intelligent release of actives (2003-2006 supported by ICI, plc - completed).

Prof. Dispenza has participated to several Coordinated Research Projects (CRP) and Regional Research Projects (RER) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the field of Radiation Synthesis of Nanomaterials for Healthcare and Radiation Curing of Nanocomposites and collaborated with IAEA as Expert for Scientific Missions in different developing countries.
