Wolfgang Wenzel

Group Leader, Nanoscale and Biomolecular Simulation Group

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

Germany

Professor Dr. Wolfgang Wenzel is Speaker of the Competence Field Nanoscience and group leader of the nanosimulation group at the Institute of Nanotechnology at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology is the union of Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (FZK), a federally funded nation laboratory in Germany and Karlsruhe University, one of the first round winners of the German excellence initiative. In the area of technology and the environment, KIT devotes its attention to research and development in a wide range of areas, including Energy, Key Technologies, Structure of Matter.

In 1990, he obtained his Ph.D. in Physics at Ohio State University and continued his research career as Postdoctoral Fellow at Ohio State University and Dortmund University where he received his habilitation in 1997. After teaching several years Theoretical Physics at Dortmund University, in 2001, he became Group Leader Nanosale Simulation at the Research Centre Karlsruhe (FZK). Since 2009 he is Associate Professor at the Department of Physics at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The INT group in computational nanotechnology at the Institute of Nanotechnology focuses on the development and application of methods for nanoscale materials simulation on long timescales, which have been applied to a number of key developments in molecular electronics, including the atomic transistor and material design. Much recent focus of his work aims at the development of multiscale materials modelling methods, funded in part by the FP7 e-infrasctucture project multiscale materials modelling (MMM@HPC).
