Professor, Biological and Agricultural Engineering

University of Arkansas

Dr. Jin-Woo Kim is currently a Professor of Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Nanoscience & Engineering at the University of Arkansas (UA) and directs the Bio/Nano Technology Laboratory at the Institute for Nanoscience & Engineering of the UA. He received his first B.S. degree in Chemical Technology from Seoul National University, Korea in 1986, the second B.S. degree in Microbiology from the University of Iowa in 1991, the M.S. degree in Biology from the University of Wisconsin in 1994, and the Ph.D. degree in Biological Engineering from Texas A&M University in 1998. His primary research interest is in the area of Bio/Nano Technology. Particular emphases were given to self-organization of nanomaterials and their biological and biomedical applications, in particular bio-driven nanostructure self-assembly, nanoscale bio/abio interfacing technology, and nanoparticle-based theranostics. Also he has engaged in research on nanobiotechnology for hybrid device development, nucleic acid technology for molecular computation, and molecular biological engineering for genomic and proteomic analyses of biomolecules. His research has been supported by over 25 extramural grants from National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, United States Department of Agriculture, Arkansas Biosciences Institute, etc. He has published extensively (over 90 peer-reviewed publications) in the field of bio/nano Technology. He has made over 140 presentations with over 40 invited presentations in professional meetings and conferences, and his research generated 3 patents pending or granted. His research program has been recognized by various magazines, such as “Research Highlight” in Nature, “News & Views” in Nature Nanotechnology, “MIT Technology Review”, “ASEE Prism”, “First Bell, ASEE”, etc., as one of the innovative research in the fields of bio/nano technology. He has held guest editorships for Nanomedicine: Nanotechnology, Biology & Medicine and Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing, and executive editorship for Journal of Nanomedicine & Biotherapeutic Discovery, as well as journal editorial board memberships for several journals, including Nanomedicine, Journal of Biological Engineering, IEEE Nanotechnology Magazine, Nanotube Therapy, etc. He has served on numerous NSF and USDA proposal review panels, received several teaching and research awards, and served as organizing committees for several international conferences, including a Steering Committee Member and General co-Chair (2011) and Program Chair (2010) of IEEE International Conference on Nano/Molecular Medicine and Engineering (IEEE-NANOMED), and Organizing co-Chair of 15th International Conference for DNA Computing and Molecular Programming (DNA15, 2009).
