Joachim Rädler

Professor

Ludwig-Maximilians Universität, Munich

Germany

Joachim Rädler is Professor for experimental physics at the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität since 2001. He studied physics at the Friedrich Wilhelms Universität Bonn and at the Technische Universität München and graduated in 1990. Within a one-year scholarship at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge (UK) he received a master degree. 1990 he joined the group of Prof. Erich Sackmann and received his doctoral degree in 1993 with a work on the interaction of phospholipid-membranes with solid surfaces. From 1994-1996 he worked as a post-doc with Prof. Cyrus Safinya at the Materials Department UC Santa Barbara. He then returned to the Technische Universität München, where he continued to study lyotropic and thermotropic phase behavior of lipid-DNA composite phases and applied cationic lipid substrates to model studies on two-dimensional polymer dynamics. Rädler received his habilitation in experimental physics in 1999. In the following year he was appointed head of the polymer physics group at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research at associate professor level.

His current research focuses on the investigation of soft biological matter, in particular composite phases of DNA, polypetides, polysaccharides and lipid membranes. General goal is to understand molecular interactions in order to build functional, multi-component nanosystems. Key principles are self-organisation, phase-transitions, and transport phenomena.
