Dr. Don Futaba is a Senior Research Scientist at the National Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) Japan. His research interests have included fundamental studies of heterogeneous catalysis of hydrocarbons on transition metal surfaces and ultrafast surface processes using femto-second lasers and scanning probe microscopy. His current primary research focus is the industrialization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) from fundamental studies of carbon nanotube synthesis, the development of economical SWCNT mass-production technologies, and the development of economical processing of SWCNTs into functional materials, eg. composites. After joining Prof. Sumio Iijima\\\\\\\'s center at AIST in 2004, he and Dr. Kenji Hata invented water-assisted chemical deposition method (Science, 2004) of SWCNTs where growth efficiency and purity were increased dramatically and simultaneously overcame obstacles of purity and yield for SWCNT synthesis. This technique would become the foundation for a government project to develop economical mass production technology which culminated in a pilot production plant capable of 0.6 kg SWCNTs per day. Currently, he continues his work with carbon nanotubes as a member of the \\\\\\\"Technology Research Association for Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes\\\\\\\" (TASC), a consortium of five companies (Sumitomo Precision Products Co., Ltd., TEIJIN Ltd., Toray Industries, Inc., ZEON Corporation, and NEC Corporation) and National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). To meet the \\\\\\\"Green Innovation Strategy\\\\\\\" of Japan to reduce CO2 emissions by 2020, this consortium was founded with the purpose of developing ultra-light, super-strength, high-performance carbon nanotube composite materials. His work is documented in 49 peer reviewed publications and 48 patents.
