Responsive nanoparticles as versatile building blocks for nanomaterials with tunable photonic properties

Peter Schurtenberger

Peter Schurtenberger

Professor of Physical Chemistry

Lund University

Sweden

Schurtenberger received his PhD from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. After several years as a postdoctoral and research fellow at the University of Lund, Sweden, the ETH in Switzerland, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University Medical School in the US he returned to the ETH in Zurich. He received the Latsis Prize of the ETH Z├╝rich 1993 for his work on the determination of the structure of macromolecules, biopolymers and colloids by means of static and dynamic light scattering. In 1999 he moved to the University of Fribourg where he received the chair in experimental physics and founded the soft matter group. In 2006 he founded the Fribourg Center for Nanomaterials and acted as its director for the first year. In 2008 he became the first director of the newly founded Adolphe Merkle Institute for pure and applied nanoscience, and received a chair in Experimental Physics and Nanoscience. He moved to Lund University at the end of 2010.

He is author or co-author of more than 200 scientific publications, on the editorial board of a number of scientific journals, has chaired the Scientific Council of the Swiss Neutron Source SINQ, is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Swiss Light Source and of the Liquids Board of the European Physical Society, and was the Swiss representative of the scientific council of the Institute Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France. He is a member of the Swiss National Research Council. He has been the general secretary of the European Colloid and Interface Society (ECIS) until 2010, and was subsequently elected as an honorary member of ECIS. He received the Rhodia Prize of the European Colloid and Interface Society in 2007. He is co-founder and member of the board of directors of the start-up company LS Instruments that develops, manufactures and markets novel light scattering instruments.
