Francisco Zaera

Francisco Zaera

Professor of Chemistry

University of California, Riverside

Francisco Zaera is a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Riverside. He received his undergraduate degree from the Simón Bolivar University in Caracas, Venezuela, and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. After a three-year stint as Assistant Chemist at the National Synchrotron Light Source of Brookhaven National Laboratory, in a joint appointment with Exxon Research Laboratories, he joined the faculty at the University of California, Riverside 1n 1986, and has remained there since.

Prof. Zaera has held a number of professional offices, including Secretary-Treasurer and President of the California Catalysis Society and Treasurer, Vice-Chair, Chair-Elect, and Chair of the Colloids and Surface Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS). He is a member of the U. S. Department of Energy Council for Chemical and Biochemical Sciences. Prof. Zaera has ample editorial experience, having been an Editor of The Journal of Molecular Catalysis A: Chemical, an invited editor for The Journal of Physical Chemistry, Topics of Catalysis, and The Encyclopedia of Chemical Physics and Physical Chemistry - IOPP, and a member of the Editorial Board of Langmuir. Prof. Zaera is currently a Senior Editor for The Journal of Physical Chemistry, and a member of the Editorial Boards for Catalysis Science & Technology, Surface Science, The Journal of Molecular Catalysis A: Chemical, Catalysis Letters, and Topics in Catalysis.

Prof. Zaera has been awarded several international awards, including the George A. Olah and Arthur W. Adamson Awards of the ACS, the North American Catalysis Society Paul H. Emmett Award, a Humboldt Research Award for Senior U.S. Scientist, and the Union Carbide Innovation Recognition Program Award. He is a Fellow of the American Chemical Society, the American Vacuum Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow.

Prof. Zaera's research interests are in the areas of surface chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis, materials chemistry, and nanotechnology, with particular emphasis on surface reaction kinetics and in-situ spectroscopic characterization of surface species. His current research projects are focused on different aspects of heterogeneous catalysis, including the design of novel nanoarchitectures for selective hydrocarbon conversions and photocatalysis, and of thin film deposition, with particular emphasis in atomic layer deposition (ALD).
