Dr. Zhong initiated her academic career in 1994 in the Composites and Manufacturing Program of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA) in Beijing, China, where she received her PhD. In 1999, Dr. Zhong was promoted to full professor, becoming the youngest full professor at BUAA, and one of the youngest full professors in China. Dr. Zhong began a tenure-track associate professorship in the Mechanical Engineering Department at North Dakota State University (NDSU) in 2003. In less than four years she secured or co-secured research grants with a total amount of over two million dollars, including four nationally competitive grants from NSF and NASA. In her second year with NDSU, she received the Researcher of the Year Award (2004-2005) in the College of Engineering. Since August 2007 Dr. Zhong joined the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Washington State University (WSU), and became a full professor in 2010. Dr. Zhong has worked closely with aero industries, and since 2006 she has been consultant and educator for Boeing engineers in the field of nanotechnology. As PI and Co-PI, Dr. Zhong has conducted many research projects on nanocomposites, bio-nanomateirals, electronic materials, and nano-manufacturing technology. Dr. Zhong has over 190 publications, including 126 peer-reviewed journal papers, 4 book chapters, 61 conference papers and 5 patents.
