Mechanical Reinforcement of Epoxy Resins using Magnetic Aligned Halloysite

In this work we report the synthesis of magnetite nanoparticles using halloysite as template. Halloysite is treated using a two steps activation method (Sn/Pd) and in a third step ferrite is formed using a coprecipitation method (Fig. 1). The presence of iron on the clay surface was confirmed by SEM/EDS; a narrow distribution of particle size from 3-5nm was found by TEM. The cristalinity of the nanoparticles was confirmed by HRTEM and SAED.The use of magnetic Halloysite as “intelligent” polymeric nanofiller in epoxy resins is also explored. Controlled alignment can be achieved by means of a directional magnetic field, obtaining an oriented reinforcement (Fig. 2). The magnetic clay-polymer nanocomposite is ultramicrotomed and observed using TEM in order to confirm alignment. Tensile mechanical reinforcement was confirmed according to ASTM D638-03 and flexural mechanical reinforcement was evaluated using DMA.
