Fabrication of nanostructured microworms for sensor applications

Abstract:

A novel method to create in vivo sensors for multiple types of ions and molecules is presented. Using initiated Chemical Vapor Deposition (iCVD), a gentle process which preserves functional pendant groups and enables conformal coatings, a 50 nm thick layer is deposited on an anodic aluminum oxide membrnae (AAO) to create cylindrical-shape structures (microworms). Microworms encapsulate an optode solution, which is used to measure the fluorescence intensity by injecting the sensor particles into the subcutaneous area of the skin. A device to measure in vivo glucose concentration has been developed using this process.
