Green and Continuous Hydrothermal Synthesis of Nanophosphors for Biomedical Applications

The luminescent properties of Y2O3:Eu have attracted considerable research interest due to the emission and chemical stability of the oxide phosphor. Subsequently, we evaluated the calcination of YOOH:Eu (4% dopant) synthesised directly in a continuous hydrothermal process. Calcination was performed in air at 550 °C for time periods of up to 30 minutes. Our results show short calcination times of a few minutes are suitable to completely dehydrate the product to form an oxide. PL lifetime measurements on the material calcined for 5 and 30 minutes gave emission half lives of 340 µS and 2.18 mS respectively. Generally increasing the length of calination caused an increase in the radiative decay time, although increasing the relative emission of the material. Our results suggest an alternate route to the preparation of these Yttria based phosphor systems from nanoparticle YOOH:Eu precursors . The authors will further present some of their latest results in the surface functionalisation of these nanomaterials and the effect on their resultant properties and suitability for bio-labeling
