Fluoropolymer Nanofibers (VDF-TFE 5 mol%) by Electrospinning

Abstract:

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) with 5 mol % of tetrafluoroethylene copolymer (VDF-TFE), is known to have the same crystal structure as pure PVDF as well as similar unique electrical properties. The β-phase of this polymers has strong ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. In this study, nano fibers of VDF-TFE copolymer were fabricated by the electrospinning process at different conditions. Stable electrospinning process conditions were established for fabrication of nanofibers composed of α- and β-phases together or of the β-phase alone. Crystal orientation parameters and crystal size were estimated from wide and small angle X-ray diffraction (WAXS; SAXS). WAXS data (Fig. 1) indicate the presence of the β-phase in every fiber sample and shows the influence of collection disk speed on the appearance of additional α- phase at linear speed V ≥ 5.2 m/sec. Use of a static collector provided non-oriented fiber mats containing only the β-phase).
