Impact of Temperature and Humidity on Superhydrophobicity of Polyurethane/Organoclay Nanocomposites

Recent preliminary investigations show that superhydrophobic coatings have the capability to reduce both ice accumulation and adhesion on a surface. Although there are recent studies of anti-icing superhydrophobic surfaces, the authors are not aware of any publications which have examined the icing capability and thermal cycle durability of superhydrophobic polyurethane/organoclay nanocomposite coatings. In the current study, static droplet and dynamic icing experiments are performed on an aluminum substrate spray casted with superhydrophobic nanocomposites. In addition to static droplet and dynamic icing experiments, the thermal cycle durability of the coatings is investigated. In a 4-cycle preliminary test, there is a slight degradation of contact angle and sliding angle measurements of the superhydrophobic coatings.
