Characterization of Catalyst Effect on Carbon Nanopearls

This presentation focuses on the effect of the Ni catalyst size on the structure of carbon nanopearls (or carbon spheres). Carbon nanopearls are known to have electronic properties, which make them ideal for cold cathode field emitters. They also can be used to enhance conductivity in ink for antennas. Characterization using the following tools enabled us to observe the effect the Ni catalyst has on the carbon nanopearls structure: Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Details on the carbon structure were provided using Raman spectroscopy. Electron microscopy of the carbon nanopearls enabled observation of the dimensions of the samples as the Ni catalyst size was changed. Finally, the effect the Ni catalyst had on the chemical composition was analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
