Poly(butyl terephthalate)/oxytetramethylene + oxidized carbon nanotubes hybrids: mechanical and tribological behavior

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been used for providing mechanical reinforcement to polymers [1, 2] – as have been other approaches. Much less attention than to mechanics has been paid to improvement of tribological properties of polymers: lowering friction, lowering scratchability and enhancing wear resistance [3, 4]. Thus, only little work has been reported on using CNTs to improve tribological properties [5]. In this project we have applied CNTs subjecting them to a functionalization process. We have developed a method of making nanohybrids from oxidized single wall CNTs in copolymer matrices by using an in situ polycondensation process. We have also used multiwall CNTs as a reinforcement for the same block copolymers and compared properties for the two kinds of CNTs. Introduction of CNTs results among others in increasing elongation at break in tensile testing and also in lowering brittleness.
