Abstract:

The 21st century brings with it staggering challenges for more advanced energy technologies that are abundant, clean, and economical. Transforming the ways we generate, supply, transmit, store, and use energy are the paramount opportunities for the world in the coming decades. Throughout our history, America?s leadership in manufacturing has depended on having the best materials. To convert sunlight to fuel, efficiently store energy, or enable a new generation of energy production and utilization technologies requires the development of new materials and processes of unprecedented functionality and performance. New materials and chemical processes are critical pacing elements for progress in advanced energy systems and virtually all industrial technologies. Nano science and technology offers exciting new opportunities for transformational energy technology -- at its root is the fact that the elementary steps involved in energy collection, utilization, and conversion take place on the nanoscale. This talk will discuss current and planned nanoscale research activities, emphasizing support of a new paradigm of materials innovation infrastructure aimed at laying the foundation for major energy technology breakthroughs.
