Quality of Life Through Intelligent Monitoring (invited presentation)

When a person is physically or mentally compromised by a chronic illness, disease, physical impairment or aging, their “Quality of Life” is compromised and may require assistance with the “activities of daily living”. This could mean a caregiver, home care services or long term care facility which is taxing on the individual, the caregiver and our health care system. We know that our current health care system is struggling to keep pace with the growing demands for care due to our growing aging population, rise in Diabetes and non compliancy issues just to name a few. We need an intervention to help bring these issues under control. Semiconductor technology continues to advance, providing tremendous levels of integration. Multicore devices reduce system complexity and enable redundancy, providing more reliable and fault tolerant systems that are capable of decision making processes. MEMS technology has advanced where we can measure our physical world, connecting to our digital world and morphing the physical world into a “connected device”. Energy harvesting is increasing the possibility for long term powered devices. Through the convergence of technologies, patient monitoring systems will benefit to become intelligent systems that will sense, process and determine action based on the interaction with the environment, other devices and the individual. These systems will potentially prevent a life threatening event or report a change in person’s activity that could result in a future safety concern. They will help maintain a person’s compliancy reducing further stress on our healthcare system and support the elderly to live independently. In this session we will discuss these topics and provide real systems available today and future concepts, in development, that will maintain a person’s health, independence maintain and improve their “Quality Of Life”.
