Control in Microfluidic Assay and Synthesis Systems (invited presentation)

M.A. Burns

Keywords: Microfluidic, assay

Microfluidic assay and synthesis devices typically have multiple liquid inputs and require precise control of samples and reagents. While components such as separation channels, reaction chambers and fluidic interconnects are relatively easy to construct, the control of these components is often less straightforward. In particular, controlling multiple liquid streams or individual liquid drops is often performed using a single pneumatic line for each channel. Multiplexing can reduce this number but off-chip solenoid valves and pneumatic interconnects can cause problems in some applications. Other situations, such as the position of individual particles in a multiple particle assembly, require more complex solutions. In this talk, I will describe several examples of both problems and solutions to control issues.
