Titanium Tungsten Coatings for Bioelectrochemical Applications

Our research interest is the combination of carbon nanotube electrochemistry with nanostructured substrates capable of cell scaffolding. Therefore, an adhesion / electric connection coating with good biocompatibility, PECVD compatibility and electrochemical stability needs to be found. With respect to that, we present an investigation of titanium tungsten (TiW) conformal coatings. Three aspects are surveyed: biocompatibility, applicability to PECVD growth of carbon nanotubes, and electrochemical performance. The experiments include: culturing of NIH3T3 mouse embryo cells on silicon nanograss scaffolds coated with TiW, growth of aligned CNT forests on these, and cyclic voltammetry characterisation. The study shows very promising applicability of TiW to nanostructured CNT-based biosensors. The material provides a set of versatile and unique properties, with especially interesting electric self-insulation of its outer layers, appearing either during anodic oxidation or during PECVD processing. It can be applied as electric connections not only for carbon nanotubes, but to other standard electrode materials, such as gold or pyrolytic carbon.
